Directors are increasingly using sync sound for their films, and prefer that mobile phones be switched off on the sets. In order to avoid unnecessary retakes, director Shakun Batra, who’s working on Short Term Shaadi with Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan, set the rule on his sets that anyone caught with his phone ringing on the sets would have to cough up a fine starting at Rs 1000.
However, a couple of days ago, the filmmaker’s phone was caught ringing, and he decided to treat his entire unit after pack up with drinks.
“We’re shooting in sync sound. To ensure that everyone mutes their phones, an announcement is made before we roll,” says Shakun, adding that the penalty started at Rs 500 for the lightmen, and went up to Rs 2000 for the heads of departments.
When asked how his rule slipped out of his mind, the director says he wasn’t around when the announcement was made. “There are no exceptions, even if the rule breaker is the same person who made them,” he jests.
Considering that they were shooting at a spa that day, the poolside was chosen as the partying spot.
“Since the shoot wrapped up early, I thought it was a good idea to get beer for the entire cast and crew around. And later, everyone was also dunked into the pool,” recalls Shakun, adding that a couple of others have also been caught bending the rules. “The spot boys are the smartest. Most of them put their phones on silent mode before the announcement is made. The others do that when they’ve paid the fine.”
