Neha Dhupia, who will be seen in the role of Hitler's girlfriend Eva Braun in Nalin Singh’s film Gandhi To Hitler, says portraying the historical character was difficult and emotionally exhausting.
“There are some characters that I have played in the past which have really made me feel attached to them. After Madhu (Ek Chalis Ki Last Local) and Sonam (Mithya), Eva (Gandhi To Hitler) is one such character,” she says.
The 30-year-old actor, whose last five releases — Phas Gaye Re Obama, Action Replayy, Raat Gayi, Baat Gayi?, De Dana Dan and Paying Guests — have been comedies, is happy to do an intense role after a long time.
In the film, directed by Rakesh Ranjan Kumar, Neha's character has a significant part in the story as Eva was the only woman who was close to Hitler, especially in the days leading to his downfall. “Eva was someone who was quite flamboyant with Hitler's soldiers. But behind that exterior of being happy and charming, there was a certain sadness and romanticism in her. I have become mellower after playing her,” she said.
Since the film is a biopic and tells a real life tale based on notes available in history books, even Dhupia did her research before putting on the garb of Eva Braun. “It isn't easy to step into the shoes of such a historical personality. I had to go through history, pick up whatever images and footage was available, and try to get an idea of what she must have been.” The film opens on Friday.
