Pankaj Kapur gets emotional after watching Shahid Kapoor’s Rangoon

Pankaj Kapur watched his son Shahid Kapoor’s Rangoon last week. And Shahid’s performance made him emotional.

After receiving rave reviews for his last outing in Udta Punjab (2016), Shahid Kapoor is waiting anxiously for the reaction of audiences to his next, Rangoon. Even though the film’s release date is almost three weeks away, not many know that Shahid’s father, Pankaj Kapur, has already seen the movie, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.

“Pankaj Kapur watched the film last week. He is among the first ones to have seen it. Of course, he loved the film, but what made him emotional is Shahid’s performance,” says an insider. Kapur has also worked with Bhardwaj in multiple films such as Maqbool (2004), The Blue Umbrella (2005) and Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013).

Apparently, after watching the film, Kapur told his son that he has done such a good job in the film that he “totally forgot he was Shahid”. “Pankaj Kapur further added that Shahid came across as a completely different person,” says the insider.

As an actor, Pankaj Kapur is “very critical” of every performance he watches. “It’s difficult for any actor to impress him, as he has a very keen eye for the craft and its nuances, and that includes Shahid,” says the insider. It’s believed that Pankaj also gave “his inputs and feedback” vis-à-vis the film to Bhardwaj with whom he has had a “family-like” equation.

Interestingly, before Rangoon, Shahid received praise from his thespian father for Haider (2014), which was also directed by Bhardwaj. Neither Kapur nor Shahid could be reached for a comment.
