Thirteen years after Govind Nihalani’s Takshak (1999), Rahul Bose is once again playing the baddie in Kamal Haasan’s bilingual (Hindi and Tamil) spy thriller, Vishwaroopam /Vishwaroopa. “It’s an action movie and Mr Haasan has written a wonderful role for me. It’s a pleasant surprise to discover a pure evil side to me and have a legitimised way of showing it,” he laughs.
The next schedule will flag off in Mumbai and the actor is looking forward to some exciting stunts and wire-works that will be enhanced by special effects. “I played 11 sports when in school and have been playing rugby for 28 years. I know how the body moves and there was never any doubt that I would enjoy this. The stunt crew is from Thailand and they were warm and complimentary when I was finished my shots. I think they approved,” he smiles.
While many insist that Kamal Haasan is an autocratic and megalomanic actor-producer-director, Rahul describes him as a "Genius, talented beyond belief" and "tremendously collaborative".
"Mr Haasan has achieved everything, and yet, remains totally committed. He was open with me," he asserts, excited about working in an action film at the age of 44.
This is Rahul’s first Tamil venture and while he points out that action films speak an international language that’s easy to understand across the globe, the actor agrees that the attempt to understand and express himself in an unfamiliar language has unlocked something new in himself.
“But I strongly feel I will never be offered another Tamil film,” he admits with a chuckle, adding, “Even though Mr Haasan said that I spoke the best Tamil amongst the non-Tamilian actors he’s worked with.”
