Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmavati continues to be mired in controversies, and there is no clarity about its release date. Ever since the film couldn’t release on the scheduled date of Dec 1 this year, several actors and filmmakers have come forward in support of Bhansali and the cast of the film. The latest one is veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who feels being violent is not justified in any way.
We caught up with the actor recently, as he shot for his next, Leena Yadav’s Rajma Chawal, in the capital. Kapoor said, “It’s very unfair that people are behaving in such an unruly manner; taking up violence and threatening in an open democracy [about] taking their lives, raising a bounty on their heads. [And that too] in a situation, where you haven’t even seen the film and are still judging it.”
Angered with how the situation has gone out of control, Kapoor added, “It’s a democracy and they [protesters] should be put behind bars. It’s like threatening a person with death. I am so sad that police has not taken any [stringent] action yet.”
Referring to Karni Sena’s objection towards the content of Padmavati based on their own assumptions, Kapoor asserted that one can’t banish any film unless they have seen it. “You don’t know what the content of the film is and you are protesting without any knowledge. How can you do that? You can do all this — of course not violence — you can raise your voice and questions once you have seen the film and after knowing its content. How stupid it is to do all this without even seeing it? Even the Supreme Court has said that wait till you see the film. So, I feel that [one should] let the Censor Board take its own decision on whether the material [in the film] is suitable for people’s viewing or not. Who are these goons to bloody judge a case before that?” retorted Kapoor.

You have to talk and debate and have a constructive argument. Why take up violence and put up bounties? This is absolutely ridiculous. These are a bunch of idiots, who are raising the alarm. Picture dekho fir bolo na. Uske bina kya chilla rahe ho? Putle jala rahe ho, 5 crore inaam de raho ho logon ke naam par. (Watch the film first, then voice your concerns. Burning effigies, raising bounties won’t help).”
