A politician said Virat Kohli should have got married in India, where Lord Ram got married.

A Madhya Pradesh politician who called Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma “unpatriotic” for not getting married in India found himself on the receiving end of jokes by celebs and Twitter alike. Kohli and Sharma got married in a resort in Tuscany, Italy, earlier this month in a wedding attended only by close family and friends.

Launching a government scheme in Guna, 214 kilometres north of Bhopal, local MLA Pannalal Shakya had said Kohli and Sharma didn’t deserve to be called youth icons because they married in Italy. “They earned money and fame in India but they didn’t find any appropriate place to marry on the land where Lord Ram got married,” Shakya told a gathering. “They are unpatriotic for getting married abroad.”

Later, speaking to Hindustan Times, he confirmed his comments and added that he was upset with the couple.

Taking on the politician, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar tweeted, “Next time @imVkohli hits his unpatriotic 1st sixer out of the park it will be in the name of that patriotic MLA.” His tweet was also retweeted by Anurag Kashyap.

TV actor Karanvir Bohra asked, “Sir BJP legislator frm MP,y r u all so narrowminded? What do u guys get by talking inane stuff? What has patriotism got to do with the location of marriage? Then On that note, the mic u were speaking from was invented by an Englishman, does dat prove u r also not a patriot?”

Comedian Vira Das wrote, “Ok. New rule. Anytime an MLA of no consequence says something incredibly ignorant and stupid...the news channels that carry it and make it trend are fined money. What say?”
