Fans of Spider-Man were in for a big surprise on Wednesday, when its maker Marvel Comics launched his revamped alter ego — an Afro-Latin American 13-year-old called Miles Morales, who lives with his parents in Brooklyn. The earlier Spidey, Peter Parker, who died in the June issue, was a Caucasian orphan.

The makers hail the move as a sign of the cultural diversity of the 21st century, and critics are calling it a radical change. Fans of the superhero worldwide are divided over the twist.

Actor Joe Manganiello, who played Eugene Flash Thompson, Parker’s nemesis in the Spider-Man film series, told us from London, "It sounds interesting. I’m a huge comic book fan and I’ll have to check it out."
