During a session about homosexuals 'coming out' to their families and to society, mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik and author Sandip Roy got into an animated discussion on what same-sex marriages in India would look like if they were legalised.
Talking about the common marriage ritual of 'kanyadaan', Pattanaik left the audience in splits with "which of the partners will be an 'offering'?"
Roy responded with "Or who will walk ahead (during the pheras)." Roy took it further by saying that India had better brace itself for arranged gay marriages'.
As the audience laughed, Devdutt quipped to Roy: "Kya aapke bete ko chai banana aata hai?" (Can your son make tea?) to which Roy responded, "Mera beta Harvard graduate hai!" (My son is a Harvard graduate)
