The leading contender for Mexico's presidency has raised a flurry of criticism for his inability to name three books that influenced him.

Asked at a weekend book fair about his favorite books, Enrique Pena Nieto could correctly name only one that he had read "parts of:" the Bible.

He stumbled for about four minutes, misattributing one book to another author and saying he didn't remember the titles of others.

Pena Nieto holds a wide lead in opinion polls for the July presidential elections, but critics portray him as attractive but superficial.

Some newspaper columnists and social media users wrote Monday Pena Nieto's lack of knowledge of history and literature would affect his ability to serve as president.
