Bibliophiles may have taken to shopping online, but a new store, spread over 9,000 sq ft, is set to offer readers a DIY den of their own. Title Waves, a split-level store in Bandra, is started by advertising professionals, Sharon and Elvis Dias. Offering a clutter-free experience to page-turners, the store does away with a conventional help-desk, bringing in place a touch-screen computer that allows visitors to check upon their desired titles on their own.
“People can search for the book according to genre, author or title here and the screen will tell you what shelf to turn to,” says Elvis, who confesses they are still in the process of stocking more tomes as well as feeding more novels into the store’s processor at the sprawling outlet.
A musical duo, the Dias’, who occasionally dabble with gospel music, have also brought their passion to the store. No wonder then, you’ll find guitars strewn around. "I encourage people to come, pick up the guitar and start playing," says Elvis, as he plugs his guitar to the amp. Point out that the music and CDs section is a tad disappointing, pushed to a corner in the store, and Elvis replies, "This is just the teaser. The CD and LP section will be in the basement. We plan to open a room for LP listening sessions too."
Located opposite Duruello Convent, the bookstore would benefit from a stationery collection that it currently lacks. And as per competition from the nearby Crossword on Turner Road, the Dias’ are confident that Title Wave will attract readers for other reasons. “We are looking beyond book launches. There will be workshops, book readings and new launches with a twist,” he says. His plans include kick-starting a marathon from his store, when Amit Sheth, author of Dare To Run visits the store. This space also will also host workshops on food, music and writing shortly.
