Singer-rapper Honey Singh, it seems, has ended up inspiring many a singer despite being booked by the police under Section 294 of the IPC (for singing, reciting or uttering an obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place). The latest on the music circuit is Baba Honey aka Hanish Kaushal who has more in common with Honey Singh than just the ‘sweetness’ in their names.
In city on Tuesday to promote his latest Punjabi music album—Brown Legs — Baba Honey refuses vehemently to have been inspired by Honey Singh’s song, Brown Rang. “I have not copied Honey Singh in any way. In fact, I have not even heard his song, Brown Rang that well. My mother calls me Honey lovingly,” he explains, and adds as an afterthought, “Honey [Singh] is a good performer and has the capability to charge up the crowd with his good music sense. But, I have my own style as a composer and wouldn’t promote vulgarity in my tracks.”
His third album, Brown Legs, which is also the name of one of the songs, is “dedicated to shorts-wearing girls on the gehri route.”
“I have sung about all that is happening today and there is nothing wrong with that,” adds Baba Honey. The album, says the singer, comprises eight tracks in pop music with a desi tadka. His first album was Bombshell Billo, released in 2011 and the second was Balle Punjabi that featured his sister Rishika Kaushal.

{{/usCountry}}Interestingly, Baba is from Himachal Pradesh and feels blessed to be singing Punjabi numbers. “I have a strong Punjabi and Hindi dialect, so I am also trying to get into playback singing in Bollywood,” says the former deck cadet who left his job in the merchant navy to shift to Mumbai to make a mark in music.
Dressed in a funky avatar, he offers by way of reason, “Aj kal simplicity da zamana nahi reha (This isn’t the era of simplicity). One doesn’t stand out until you look different.”
Baba, who claims to have sung a song called Sabh Chalta Hai in the 2010 Hindi film I Am 24, says he recently recorded the title track of a film called Boss, starring Akshay Kumar and would next be composing a song
for Himesh Reshammiya.
“I have good connections in Bollywood and so, am doing pretty well there,” he signs off.
