First it was The Humma Song and now it’s Tamma Tamma Again. Hate them or love them but you can’t ignore these remixes of trademark 90s songs that have take over airwaves completely. Unlike many other industry insiders, composer Amit Trivedi has taken a stand against this trend.
Speaking to us before his performance at the Riders Music Festival in the capital, he said, “I don’t like this concept of remixing old songs at all. I don’t want to listen to these songs again. They’ve been popular before; we’ve all heard them at one point of time and enjoyed them to the fullest also. What is the point of recreating them? There’s no fun in that. Mujhe sunna hoga toh main purana gaana hi sun lunga dobara. It’s dumb for me. Wahi puraane ko revamp karke, naya kapda pehnake, waste kar rahe ho; I think that’s damn boring and annoying.”
He traces the trend back to audience’s acceptance of mediocrity and musicians’ fear of failure and says, “People do it because the majority of the audience loves it. After that, nothing matters. I don’t think any of the old songs should be touched and mixed again. Naya banao, please. The musicians need to have faith in themselves and in their producers and music labels. They should learn to take risks and have faith in their listeners. We need to up our tastes and our ability to take risks. Everyone is in panic mode right now. They’re worried ki naya gaana chalega ya nahi chalega. So everyone’s playing safe. I hate people who play it safe all the time because safe is so boring.”
