14 services exempted from 12% tax

Advocates providing services to entities with a turnover of up to R10 lakh, transportation by passengers in a ropeway or entities providing public conveniences will not have to pay 12% service tax.

Advocates providing services to entities with a turnover of up to R10 lakh, transportation by passengers in a ropeway or entities providing public conveniences will not have to pay 12% service tax.

The Centre has announced that 14 more services would be exempted from paying service tax by including these in the negative list which shall come into effect from July 1.

With the inclusion of 14 items, the total number of services in the negative list will go up to 38. All other services which do not figure in the list will be taxed.

The new services in the negative list include those of advocates’ firms on the same lines as individual advocates, auxiliary education services and renting of immovable property provided by educational institutions in respect of education. Other services included are transportation by passengers in a ropeway, cable car or air tramway, services of public libraries and public conveniences.
