According to a report in The Times, London, Ambani, who is the sixth richest man in the world, is planning a £260 million bid to buy his ‘favourite’ English Premier League club.

The report also says that Ambani’s Reliance Communications had earlier been invited to make a bid for Newcastle earlier this summer, but did not meet the board’s valuation at that time.

Though Reliance has denied any knowledge of making such a move, Ambani’s company has been, according to the report, “following developments at the club and the team to investigate the viability of a bid”.

When contacted, a spokesman for Reliance Communications denied the report. “There is no such thing as of now,” he said.

Newcastle, which is owned by American Mike Ashley, is a club in turmoil at the moment with manager Kevin Keegan being sacked after only three games into the new season.

If the deal does indeed go through, Ambani will become the first Indian owner of a Premier League Club.
