The 32-year-old India-born Chandilya was selected as AirAsia’s India CEO in March itself but his name was finally revealed by Tony Fernandes, AirAsia’s Group CEO, on micro blogging site Twitter on Wednesday after the airline’s board gave its formal approval to the appointment.

Chandilya’s appointment makes him one of the youngest CEO’s of an Indian airline.

On Wednesday, Fernandes tweeted, "I am pleased to announce the board of Airasia India has appointed Mittu Chandilya as CEO of Airasia India." "Mittu is coming home to change Indian travel."

Chandilya, who assumes office on June 1, has MBA degrees from INSEAD, France/Singapore and from Tsinghua University, Beijing.

"I am excited about returning to India to revolutionize the air travel industry here," Chandilya said.

"I am confident that Mittu will provide the leadership and bring to bear his entrepreneurial skills in successfully growing this new airline in the Indian aviation space," Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons Limited said.
