Since the Central Bureau of Investigation began probing the finance ministry's alleged leakgate, the department of economic affairs (DEA) has blocked all officers up to the director rank from accessing private websites and domains.
According to orders, officials can now access only those websites with government domains - 'nic.in' and 'gov.in'.
Officials in the know of the developments said the step was taken in view of recent reports suggesting leaking of information. "The aim is not to create an extreme environment. But maintaining the secrecy of some information is crucial."
However, no such restrictions are in place at the finance ministry's other departments such as disinvestment, financial services, revenue and expenditure.
Meanwhile, the government has issued orders to all ministries to shift their email IDS from private domains to the official 'nic.in'. But, officials say, this would cause problems while sending heavy files.
The Gazette of India issued on February 19 highlighted that the government's IT resources should be used for official purposes only. It also pointed out that the use of social media for government purposes should adhere to the rules issued by the department of electronics and information technology.
