The falling rupee has increased the value of all things foreign – including non-resident Indian (NRI) grooms. Reason: the rupee value of dollar salaries has risen about 20% since May.

“The demand for NRI grooms, which fell by over 20% after the 2008 global financial crisis, is rising again” said Gourav Rakshit, COO, Shaadi.com, one of the India’s largest matrimonial websites.
“In August, there was a 9% increase (over July) in the number of people looking exclusively for NRI grooms,” said the spokesperson for Jeevansathi.com, another big matrimonial search site. Other marriage portals, such as Shaadi.com and Freemarriage.com, have also witnessed a sudden rise in demand for NRI groom.
Telugu, Gujarati, Malayali, Tamil, Konkani and Punjabi parents/women make up the majority of those searching for NRI grooms, the Jeevansathi.com spokesperson said.
“They will do well to bear in mind that the higher rupee value of dollar salaries earned in the US will give them bragging rights in India. It has no tangible benefits since they/their daughters will have to live abroad and spend in dollars,” a senior executive at a matrimonial website said.
