Think you can do better than the finance minister in drawing up India’s annual budget? Well, take a crack at it in five simple steps with this interactive visualisation.

About the interactive
The markers at the start indicate the numbers of the last budget, organised under various income and expenditure heads. On top is fiscal deficit as a percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP). Use the sliders to change how you would like the government to spend and earn. For every number you increase or decrease, you can see thee effect on the fiscal deficit as well as what it means for India on the ground.

Follow these five steps to build your budget

1. Start with last year's budget allocations on spending and earning. The allocations are indicated by the markers at default position. Use them as base and then tweak them as you wish.

2. Choose from the sub-heads under the income and expenditure heads to open detailed parameters.

3. With every change you make, watch out for the following two spaces:

a) First, the circular dashboard that indicates how the change you made impacts the country's current budget deficit, or the difference between what the government spends and what it earns.

b) Second, the block on the upper right that will tell you the changes you made will impact people's lives in real terms.
