With injuries to nine players in the last ten days of Indian Premier League 3 (IPL3), the public sector Oriental Insurance Company, which has provided the medical emergency covers to all of the tournament’s players, is expecting to cough up around Rs 60 lakh to 1 crore in claims.
The franchises/team owners had covered each of the 104 players who have been contracted by auction for emergency medical expenses at $ 10 million (Rs 45.52 crore) with the expense for a single event/sickness capped at $1 million (Rs 4.5 crore). On the other hand, the medical emergency cover for 125 players outside the auction framework is Rs 5 lakh each. However, no details are available on the premium amounts paid for the cover.
The injuries to the eight players range from rib injury, fractures to twisted ankles and sprains. While Delhi Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir suffered from a hamstring injury, Graeme Smith of Rajasthan Royals was flown back with a double fracture in his right middle finger.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni of Chennai Super Kings suffered an elbow problem while Dimitri Mascarenhas, another Rajasthan Royals player, twisted his ankle.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, a senior Oriental Insurance official said, “We have to see the nature of the injury, the date of the injury and other details. Players during the course of the tournament and during practice sessions suffer from injuries. With injuries to eight players so far, we expect the claim amount to be in the range of Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1 crore.”

With insurance covers active for all the 60 matches of IPL3 and just 16 matches played so far, Oriental Insurance is keeping its fingers crossed for the remaining 44 matches that are remaining to be played.
