TCS is setting up its largest training centre in Kerala — 150,000-seater facility worth Rs 1,000-crore, after its 1,600-strong campus became full swing. Infosys is setting up its second 1,800-seater software development block in state capital Thiruvananthapuram, Cognizant Technologies has signed deals with state government to set up a 15,000-seater facility and Wipro, which has a five-acre campus in Kochi, has sought more land for expansion.
“Given our ecologically sensitive topography, population density and shortage of land, heavy industries do not suit us,” Oommen Chandy, chief minister of Kerala told HT in an exclusive interview. “We have special focus on IT and tourism sectors.”
He said that the offices of global IT majors will start functioning from the upcoming Rs 2000-crore IT township Smart City in Kochi in the next 18 months.
Major hotel chains such as Radisson and Marriot have already shown interest while Taj is already a big presence in Kerala’s tourism landscape. “While state will provide infrastructural support we want private players to invest in Kerala’s tourism industry,” said Chandy.
About Kerala’s growing IT aspirations, Kris Gopalakrishnan, executive co-chairman, Infosys said: “the state worked towards enhancing infrastructure and we are encouraged by this development. Availability of quality manpower has been an impetus to expand in Kerala.”
Ajoyendra Mukherjee, executive vice-president and head of global human resources, TCS, also said the company will tap the skilled IT professionals in the region. “Our new campus here will be learning hub of the organisation and will be connected with all other satellite training facilities across the globe,” he said.
