The Indian rupee on Tuesday plunged by 27 paise against the greenback in early trade on heavy dollar demand from importers amid weak Asian equity markets.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the domestic unit, which gained 26 paise to 47.38/39 on Monday, depreciated by 27 paise at 47.65 against the US$.

However, the Indian benchmark Sensex closed at 10,536.16 on Monday, up by 571.87 points, or 5.74 per cent.
