The rupee appreciated by 5 paise to Rs 44.25 a dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market in the morning trade on Thursday, following US dollar's losses against other international trading currencies.

Dealers said apart from dollar's weakness, capital inflow into equities by foreign funds also kept the rupee sentiment firm.
The rupee had ended flat at Rs 44.30/31 against the US currency in the previous session.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex rose by 60.24 points to 20,935.95 in the opening trade.
