The 30-share index, which had lost 284.53 points in previous day's trading, fell further by 61.93 points to 8,545.15 following reports that the US equity market plunged to 12-year lows on fears of deepening recession.

The 50-share National Stock Exchange Nifty also fell by 20.25 points to 2,654.35 points.
