Despite unsuccessful attempts to merge with South Africa-based MTN twice in the last two years, Bharti Airtel is giving greater focus on international business. The company on Wednesday announced large-scale organisational changes, and has set up a dedicated international business group.
Manoj Kohli, presently CEO (India and South Asia) & joint managing director (MD), has been redesignated as CEO (International) and joint MD of the company. He will continue to be member of the Board.
Sanjay Kapoor, currently the Deputy CEO, will step into Kohli’s shoes and will become CEO (India and South Asia). He will be responsible for mobile services, telemedia services, enterprise services and DTH.
“The next phase of our journey is set to be another game changer — requiring superior thrust and focused leadership,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman & managing director of Bharti Airtel. “We will be developing comprehensive plans for our journey to cover emerging markets beyond India and the South Asia.”
Both Kohli and Kapoor will report to Mittal. The new structure is effective April 1, 2010.
Currently, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the only countries where Bharti has significant operations. Last year it could not merge its operations with MTN due to regulatory and policy hurdles
