According to the latest Gartner projections, sales of tablets and mobile phones will continue to grow through 2015, while, over the same period, PC sales will continue to slow down. In 2013 alone, tablet sales should increase by 67.9 percent compared with 2012, while PC sales are set to see a drop of 10.6 percent.
Sales of computers, tablets and smartphones combined should total 2.35 billion products in 2013, which represents an increase of 5.9 percent in one year. This trend is set to continue through 2014 with 2.5 billion products sold -- an increase of 6.7 percent.
In its breakdown, Gartner predicts sales of tablets to increase by 67.9 percent in 2013, then by 36.8 percent in 2014, reaching a yearly sales total of 276 million products. Sales of mobile phones are also set to continue growing but at a more moderate pace -- with an increase of 4.3 percent in 2013 and 4.4 percent in 2014, to reach yearly sales of 1.9 billion.
Gartner however is predicting a decline in PC sales in 2013, dropping by 10.6 percent and then by another 5.2 percent in 2014. However in numbers, PCs should still outsell tablets in 2014 (289 million vs 276 million), even if tablets look set to sell well over the long term
In 2014, Android could be the operating system on 42 percent of these devices, compared with 22 percent in 2012.
