Tata BP Solar, the largest player in the Indian solar energy sector, hopes to build new plants with a combined capacity of more than 100 MW in 2012, against 57 MW capacity, it built this year, said its CEO K Subramanya.
The Rs 906 crore-turnover company, a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) player, had won in 2010 contracts to build ten solar power plants under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).
“We have already completed nine of those projects and will finish all ten by December 31,” Subramanya said.
The government had awarded solar projects with a total capacity of 804 MW under the first batch of JNNSM, which are at various stages of completion.
Under the batch II, 350 MW new projects were awarded in the latest round of bidding early this month. Consequently, EPC players such as Tata BP and Moser Baer are pitching for contracts from developers who won these bids.
About 1,100 MW grid connected solar power plant is expected to be commissioned by March 2013.
While India is pursuing the goal of installing 22,000 MW solar power capacity by 2020, the sunrise sector is facing challenges in terms of finance. “Banks should come forward to support solar projects,” he said.
