US stocks opened higher on Thursday after news of banking company Wachovia Corp.'s proposed buyout of brokerage AG Edwards Inc, a sign the takeover trend was still going strong.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 9.67 points, or 0.07 per cent, at 13,642.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 2.33 points, or 0.15 per cent, at 1,532.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 8.22 points, or 0.32 per cent, at 2,600.81.
