US stocks: Indexes up on M&A in financial sector

US stocks opens higher after news of banking company Wachovia Corp.'s proposes buyout of brokerage AG Edwards Inc.

US stocks opened higher on Thursday after news of banking company Wachovia Corp.'s proposed buyout of brokerage AG Edwards Inc, a sign the takeover trend was still going strong.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 9.67 points, or 0.07 per cent, at 13,642.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 2.33 points, or 0.15 per cent, at 1,532.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 8.22 points, or 0.32 per cent, at 2,600.81.
