The Punjab government on Friday approved a major plan to strengthen the ayurvedic wing of its health department and recruited 116 ayurvedic medical officers to fill all vacant posts in various dispensaries.

Health and family welfare minister Madan Mohan Mittal stated that recruitment had been done after many years and he would handover job letters to all new appointees personally. He said 200 primary health centres, five ayurvedic hospitals, and seven Indian system of medicines (ISM) wings and panchkarma centre at Mohali were being equipped with ayurvedic facilities.
The department plans to come up with 12 specialty clinics in primary health centres (PHCs) and seven new ISM wings in the district hospitals of Mansa, Patiala, Kapurthala, Moga, Muktsar, Faridkot and Fatehgarh Sahib.
The minister said the fund requirement for free medicine supply would cross Rs 5 crore in the year, as the demand at all ayurvedic dispensaries had increased fast. He said the average number of patients at the dispensaries had gone from 15 to 35 a day. The department has sought a grant of Rs 67.5 crore from the Centre for the year 2013-14 to strengthen the ISM infrastructure.
