A husband-wife duo and two girls were arrested for making an unsuccessful attempt to break open an unmanned automated teller machine (ATM) of Axis Bank at Behlana village in the wee hours on Wednesday.
Those arrested have been identified as Rajwant Singh (24), his wife Umita (22), residents of Jagadhri in Haryana, Megha (21) and Malika (20), both residents of Behlana.
Police said Rajwant Singh, who had done his mechanical engineering and was unemployed, came to the city with his wife last week. They stayed at the house of Umita's friends Megha and Malika. The two girls worked in a SAS Nagar-based call centre.
They hatched a plan to break open an ATM near the residence of Megha and Malika. Equipped with gas cutter, the couple entered the ATM booth at around 2 am, while the girls stood guard outside. They broke the CCTV camera installed in the booth and managed to open the lid of ATM, but could not break the locker.
Deep Singh, resident of Behlana, who was returning home, saw two girls standing outside the ATM. The girls fled as he approached them. Deep entered the ATM and saw a man and woman, with their faces covered, trying to break open the machine. Rajwant Singh attacked Deep with a knife, but the latter overpowered him.

{{/usCountry}}As Deep raised an alarm, two residents of Behlana - Suraj and Salim -who were returning home after watching movie came to his rescue. Police were informed and the husband-wife duo was arrested. Megha and Malika were also apprehended later.
A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. The four were produced in a local court and were sent in judicial custody.
