37 protection homes in Punjab for runaway couples: Punjab to HC

The Punjab government today informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that it had made the facility of 37 protection homes in 22 districts available for those couples who marry against the wishes of their parents in order to give them protection and for even registration of marriages.

The Punjab government on Monday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that it had made the facility of 37 protection homes in 22 districts available for those couples who marry against the wishes of their parents in order to give them protection and for even registration of marriages.

Sucha Singh, undersecretary, department of home affairs, submitted this information during the resumed hearing of the case before the division bench headed by acting chief justice Jasbir Singh.

The officer said that after setting up of the protection homes, 40 couples had stayed in them till date. The highest number of 11 couples had stayed in a shelter home in Fatehgarh Sahib.

The court was also informed that the highest number of 45 marriages registered against the wishes of parents were in the protection homes of Ferozepur district out of the 53 such marriages registered in all protection homes across the state.
