Two members of Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) went on an indefinite hunger strike demanding Panjab University (PU) to alter the eligibility criteria for admission to three courses- MA economics, MA remote sensing and MA disaster management.
PUSU president Navaldeep Singh, who is sitting on the hunger strike, said discrimination was being carried during admissions to MA economics. "Only those students who have done bachelor in arts (BA) in their graduation are being considered for admission to MA economics while others are being over looked,"he said.
Accompanying Singh in the strike, senior PUSU leader Ashish Kumar said MA in both remote sensing and disaster management was being provided by the department of geography under the self-financing scheme. However, due to the "tough" eligibility criteria wherein a student has to score 50% marks in the entrance test only a small percentage of the seats have been filled, he added.
"Since the course comes under the self-financing scheme we demand that the 50% marks criteria should be relaxed so that more students can take admissions in the courses,"Singh said.
Apart from these demands, the student body has also been asking the university to immediately conduct the reappear examination of University Institute of Engineering and Technology's (UIET) final year students.
