UT deputy commissioner Mohammed Shayin, Chandigarh Housing Board Chairman Satya Gopal and other officials were present in the meeting.

UT administrator Shivraj Patil had on September 23 directed the officials to make necessary arrangements before the Bill was introduced in the city.

The Bill, which was approved by Parliament earlier this month, gives right to subsidised foodgrain to over 65% population of the country.

Based on National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) Consumption Expenditure Survey data for 2011-12, the Planning Commission has estimated that 38.54% of the rural population of Chandigarh and 47.26% urban population will get covered under the Food Security Act.

As per official record, there are 10,000 below poverty line (BPL) card holders and 82,000 above poverty line (APL) card holders in the city.

The Bill also has a special focus on nutritional needs of women and children. The eldest women of the household above 18 years, is considered the head of the household for the purpose of issue of ration cards as per provisions of the Bill. Pregnant women and lactating mothers will get maternity benefit of ` 6,000, besides nutritious food. Children below 14 years of age will get food with higher nutritional norms.
