After Chandigarh going all out to dedicate the festival of Lohri to the girl child, it is now Indie rock band Euphoria’s turn to raise its voice against injustice towards women.
When in Jalandhar recently, the band announced its nine-city north India tour to promote women empowerment.
Their relatively new single, Main Hoon, which celebrates womanhood, flagged off their tour in Jalandhar on January 13.
The band’s lead vocalist, Dr Palash Sen, says, “The band has come to Punjab to celebrate ‘Kudiyan Di Lohri’. We want to sentitise the people of Punjab about women’s empowerment. A woman is the most beautiful creation of God, whom man must learn to appreciate. People who commit heinous crimes against women should not forget that they owe their very existence to a woman.”
Vaishali Barua, the other vocalist who has been with the band for seven years, says, “We need to change people’s mindsets. Crime and injustice towards women has been carrying on for ages. It’s high time women start celebrating their womanhood, as described in our song. It’s not a mercy plea; women from all walks of life, irrespective of their status or job, have been portrayed in it.”
Being the only Indian rock band to have performed in Karachi twice (Euphoria was also supposed to perform earlier this month in Lahore with Junoon), Palash further shares, “We have our fair share of trouble getting visas for Pakistan. Last year, just two days prior to the band’s performance, the administration denied us the NOC. The authorities need to realise that we go there to entertain people, to bring both cultures closer, not bombard them!”

{{/usCountry}}The band now plans to perform in Lahore next month and is all set to release its first ever spiritual album, Sharangat, which literally means surrender. The album has seven tracks, out of which three have been composed by Palash Sen’s father, and four by him.
“It’s the first time a rock band is coming up with a spiritual album. There has, however, been a dash of spirituality in some of our previous tracks. The title song of the forthcoming album, and two other tracks, were composed by my father in 1979.”
Euphoria was in Jalandhar to celebrate ‘Kudiyan Di Lohri’ at CT Institutes on Sunday evening.
