Meena, daughter of a smalltime shopkeeper in Guwahati, was in school, when she was married off, which, according to her, was not considered an unusual practice by the natives there.

On who approached her family for striking the alliance, she said it was one of her shopkeeper husband’s three brothers, who was posted in the Central Reserve Police Force in Assam.

Despite living a stone’s throw from house of Meera Deka, who hails from Meena’s native place, the latter who lives with her husband, three children and mother-in-law in a one-room set, rarely get the opportunity to meet up with the former and share their concerns.

“Even 24 hours are less to finish the amount of work women here have to do so I rarely get the opportunity to speak, as none from our family likes us to wander aimlessly sans work,” said Meena.

Meena’s elderly mother-inlaw said they gave a new identity to her and today she is adept at chopping feed for animals, milking buffaloes, churning milk, respecting elders and above all she is also fair complexioned unlike brides from southern states.
