Three policemen faced action on Thursday for shoddy probe into the accident in which an Audi Q7 SUV had rammed into a Chevrolet Tavera cab killing three of the latter's occupants on Monday night on the Sector 17-18 road.
UT inspector general of police (IGP) RP Upadhayaya transferred Sector-17 SHO inspector Ram Gopal and police post in-charge sub-inspector Harminderjit Singh to the Police Lines in Sector 26, while investigating officer (IO) sub-inspector Kuldeep Singh was placed under suspension. The action came on a report by SSP Naunihal Singh.
However, the probe remained sketchy as no arrests were made. The Audi's owner -- Panchkula realtor Rajat, 30 - had claimed before the cops on Tuesday that his driver Sukhpal Singh was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, reportedly caused due to the Audi's tyre bursting. The police wanted to check CCTV camera footage of the spot to determine who was driving, but the camera was non-functional.
The IGP said on Thursday that the SSP had found the case was not handled properly. Terming the probe team careless, he said, "There cannot be two FIRs in one case." After the incident, the police had initially registered a case against the driver of the Tavera - who died -- on the statement of a Home Guards volunteer. It was only after the families of the victims protested that a case of causing death by negligence was registered against the driver of the Audi.
A special investigation team (SIT) comprising two DSPs and two inspectors has now started work with the help of forensic experts, who visited the spot to gather clues. DSP (central) Ashish Kapoor acknowledged that though the probe was on, no one had been arrested so far.
