Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday sought intervention of governor Shivraj Patil for checking discharge of polluted water through Sukhna Choe in Chandigarh into Ghaggar river, during a meeting held at Raj Bhawan.
Badal said this untreated wastewater was a major health hazard for people living along the Ghaggar, and apprised the governor of eight vulnerable points in Chandigarh through which untreated waste water and sewage was being dumped into the Ghaggar.
Referring to a survey by Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), the CM said these points at IT Park, Kishangarh, Indira Colony, Shastri Colony, Manimajra, Bapu Dham Colony, Dariya, Hallomajra, sewerage treatment plants (STPs) at Raipur Khurd and Raipur Kalan were main sources of pollution in the river.
Listing the steps initiated by the state government to reduce pollution in Satluj, Beas and Ghaggar rivers, Badal informed the governor that STPs had been set up across the state, besides a close tab was being kept on the industrial units to disallow the flowing of untreated waste water in the rivers.
Responding to the issues, the governor said Chandigarh administration had already given in-principle approval for sanctioning funds worth Rs 2.5 crore to plug the points causing pollution in the Ghaggar.

{{/usCountry}}Patil also asked the CM to depute the officers of the state government and PPCB to conduct a joint inspection with the officers of the Chandigarh administration.
The governor also asked the officers of the Chandigarh administration to gear up the entire machinery for ensuring completion of the entire work to stop untreated waste water discharge into river Ghaggar.
