The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday granted a week to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file its reply on a petition seeking a CBI probe into the case of Vidhu Jain, 11, who was burnt alive in Malerkotla on September 30 last year.
The court also pulled up the Sangrur senior superintendent of police (SSP) for not complying with earlier court orders to ascertain the threat perception to the petitioner and family member and to protect their lives and liberty.
Aarti Jain alleged that her son Vidhu was burnt alive by five Muslim youths after pouring kerosene on him. The boy had died at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana. The FIR was registered at the city police station, Malerkotla.
The petitioner also made a prayer for the protection of her life and liberty, along with that of the Jain community, that is nearly 2,500-strong in the Malerkotla area. She alleged in her petition that the Muslim community, that has a strength of more than 80,000 in the area, had been targeting the Jain community members in the past.
The petitioner has sought directions to the authorities concerned to investigate the alleged role of police officials who had not probed the case properly. The court was informed that the accused were still moving freely.

{{/usCountry}}Aarti has accused the medical staff of the civil hospital, Malerkotla, of negligence, allegedly due to which the minor could not be saved. She also submitted that though the Punjab government had announced Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family, the amount may be distributed among officials who would fairly probe the matter and provide speedy justice.
The case would now come up for hearing on September 19.
