Chandan Prabhakar, popular as Kapil Sharma’s house help in television show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’, is all set to appear in yet another Punjabi film after and Power Cut (2012) and Disco Singh (2014). In Chandigarh on Saturday to shoot a sequence from Atharv Baluja’s ‘Judge Singh LLB’, the Amritsar-born stand-up comedian chatted with HT.
Prabhakar, a witty individual as one would expect, plays “a dear friend of the hero” in the murder mystery. “The Punjabi audience, I’m sure, would like a break from the overdose of comedy. They wouldn’t want to get up from their seats even after those two hours,” said the actor, who has also written the screenplay and dialogues of this film that the producers hope to release in September.
The runner-up of the third season of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’, Prabhakar says that his contemporary stand-up comedians such as Kapil Sharma and Sudesh Lehri have a brand of humour that comes naturally to them, which makes them a hit. “Jeet toh Amritsar ki huyi thi uss season (It was Amritsar that won in that season).” Kapil and Lehri also belong to Punjab’s holy city.
Asked how the character of ‘Comedy Nights’ would change, since Arshard Warsi and Sajid Khan are being roped in as hosts to replace an ailing Kapil, he said: “Ma ke kitney hi bachche kyun na ho, usay apne bachchon ki aadat pad jaati hai (A mother gets used to her children, no matter how many), but Kapil is irreplaceable.” Besides sharing a wonderful professional relationship, the two are also childhood friends. On the rise of stand-up comedians in the country in just a couple of years, Prabhakar said it was only natural, since Indians now lead a more hectic and stressful life. “Jab tak haalat hain, tab tak comedy hai (As long as there are circumstances, there is comedy),” he said with a smile.
