After going through the detailed presentation of the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) on Monday, UT adviser Vijay Dev said, “CITCO hotels should be made commercially viable with enhanced services to combat the competition posed by the private chain of hotels.”
Taking a serious note of the losses worth crores being incurred by CITCO, the UT adviser has asked the employees to prepare a list of reasons behind the department’s dismal functioning and submit a report, including short-term solutions, within 15 days.
He also asked the authorities to gear up for the competition posed by the private players.
The development is significant as the revenue of Hotel Mountview, a five-star hotel, in Sector 10, and Parkview Hotel in Sector 24, a budget hotel, have been decreasing for the past few years.
Hotel Mountview has incurred loss of around Rs 2 crore in the past due to low occupancy rate. Even the eateries like Baithak in Kalagram and other places have also suffered losses.
It was pointed out during the presentation that CITCO was going in losses and the occupancy in its hotels, including the prime ones such as Hotel Mountview in Sector 10 and Hotel Shivalik View in Sector 17.
Discussing the possible reasons behind the losses, the adviser said, “It should be checked whether these hotels are properly maintained or not. Are these hotels in shabby condition, not giving adequate services, or is there any internal leakage of food items? The internal control mechanism, income and expenditure should also be studied in detail.”
Adding further, the adviser said CITCO should focus on making hotels commercially viable, and also giving better services to tourists. From finance and engineering to training of employees, all factors need to be analysed.
It was also discussed during the meeting that the training of CITCO staff was also must, and the responsibility of erring employees should also be fixed.
Start online system for taking feedback
It was discussed during the meeting that CITCO should have an online system to get feedback from tourists and guests. The CITCO director should get direct feedback about staff’s behaviour and other problems faced by hotels, so that required action can be taken.
The adviser also categorically stated that CITCO should not indulge in giving advantages to a person at individual level, which, he said, was not a part of the CITCO policy.
