Police on Sunday arrested a Yamunanagar resident for allegedly abandoning his newborn daughter near the cremation ground at Sector 25 in Chandigarh.

The hospital admission tag helped the police to nab the accused.

The police said during interrogation, accused Vashisht, 35, said the girl was born on April 1 at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, but died soon after her birth.

He took the body of his daughter to the cremation ground, he claimed, where an unidentified man asked for Rs100 to carry out burial.

He handed over the body and Rs100 to the man and left the cremation ground, said the police.

Vashisht claimed that the man might have abandoned the body after he departed, the police added.

Police sources said the body was spotted by passersby, who informed the police immediately.

A police team reached the spot and rushed the newborn to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) in Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead, said sources.

Station house officer (SHO) of the Sector 11 police station inspector Narinder Patial said a case was registered under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier on March 17, body of a newborn boy was found near Post Graduate Government College in Sector 11 and the accused was arrested.
