Chandigarh: Lawyers to abstain from work on Monday

Following a call by the Bar Council of India (BCI), lawyers in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh will abstain from their work on Monday to protest against the "killing" of a lawyer at an Allahabad court in Uttar Pradesh on March 11.

Following a call by the Bar Council of India (BCI), lawyers in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh will abstain from their work on Monday to protest against the "killing" of a lawyer at an Allahabad court in Uttar Pradesh on March 11.

Chairman of the Bar council of Punjab and Haryana Rakesh Gupta told Hindustan Times that the lawyers of high court and lowers courts in both the states and Union Territory of Chandigarh would abstain from work for one day on Monday.

The BCI on March 12 had written to all state bar councils to abstain from work to condemn the killing of the lawyer allegedly by a policeman in a court premises in Allahabad.

The BCI has demanded a judicial probe into the incident and an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50 lakh to the victim's family.
According to reports, a sub-inspector shot dead a lawyer on the Allahabad district court premises on Wednesday, after some lawyers reportedly threatened to beat him following an altercation.
