After member of Parliament Kirron Kher, now mayor Poonam Sharma has also come out in defence of UT administration officials over the mess erupted during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Chandigarh on September 11.
In a letter to the PM, mayor said, “The officials shouldn’t be held responsible for the mess. The orders to close down the schools, or the cremation ground, were given because the BJP leaders pressurised the officials to do so. If you really want to take action, take it against the BJP leaders.”
The letter further reads, “Being mayor of Chandigarh, I warn you against taking any action against these officials, otherwise you will be answerable to the people of the city, since the decision will be condemned by all.” “Abdul Kalam, former President said no holiday should be announced on his death, and schools, colleges and all government institutes should remain open. However, the schools were closed down during your visit. It was shocking you sought explanation from the officials, asking who issued the orders. Rather a question should be asked from the BJP leaders - since they wanted schools buses for ferrying people to make the rally successful - who pressurised them to do so,”states the letter.
After the PM ordered an inquiry into the issue, MP Kher had said, the UT has responsible officials, and if they took the decision to close down the schools, it was in the interest of the students.
