Chandigarh skater Gaurav made the country proud by winning gold in the 500m race in the ongoing Special Olympics in the US on Wednesday. The 16-year old skater, who is a student of society for rehabilitation of the mentally challenged (SOREM), Sector 36, clocked 1:39.35s to clinch the top honours.
On Tuesday, he had finished fourth in 1000m race.
“Gaurav is exited after winning the gold medal. He missed the podium finish yesterday by a whisker, but today he made up for the loss,” said coach Jaswinder Singh Goldy while talking to HT from the US.
“He is a hard working chap and never used to miss training sessions. He is quite moody, but when it comes to skating, he loves to do it. On a daily bases he used to skate for 20-25km,” added Goldy, who is giving coaching to Gaurav since the last one year.
Gaurav, who is a Sector 40 resident, has won two gold medals in the national championship last year. His father owns a helmet accessories shop at Sector 48.
