After the complainant in a corruption case against former assistant inspector general (AIG) of Punjab Police, PS Sandhu, tur ned hostile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has moved an application seeking permission to record the former’s voice sample.
During the resumed hearing in the graft case, complainant Nishant Sharma, a former office-bearer of ShivSena (Hindustan), denied that the voice in the recordings placed as evidence in the case is his.
Nishant, while testifying before CBI special judge Vimal Kumar on Tuesday claimed that he had left the venue from where the AIG was arrested by the CBI soon after the trap was laid, thus the voice in the post-trap recordings cannot be his. He claimed that no post-trap proceedings were done in front of him as claimed by the CBI.
The case would now come up for hearing on May 21, when defence is likely to file reply to the application.
On July 13, 2011, the CBI ar rested AIG PS Sandhu, a Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer, while allegedly accepting bribe. Sandhu, who was posted as the AIG (internal vigilance cell) at the Punjab Police headquarters at that time, was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of 50,000 from Nishant Sharma at Café Coffee Day in Sector 28.
As per the allegations, Sandhu had demanded the bribe for favouring Nishant in an inquiry pending against him. Sandhu had earlier allegedly demanded 3 lakh but when Nishant expressed inability to pay the amount, they settled the deal at 50,000.
