Additional district and sessions judge SS Sahni on Friday awarded three-month jail to UT police constable Jagbir Singh, arrested for firing gunshots in an inebriated state outside the UT SSP's official residence in March last year.
Though Jagbir was acquitted of the charges of attempt to murder and criminal intimidation, the court found him guilty of endangering life and personal safety of others by his act of firing gunshots.
However, another UT police constable Balir Singh arrested by the police in the case was acquitted as there were no allegations against him.
“The prosecution could not prove that Jagbir had fired with an intention to kill inspector Satpal, who had intervened, and failed to even prove that the inspector had a narrow escape as claimed by the police. The accused, thus, is guilty of endangering the life and personal safety of others and not attempt to murder,” observed the court while pronouncing the order.
As per the prosecution, Jagbir, who was in-charge of PCR van around 1.30am on March 12, 2012, fired gunshots in the air and hurled abuses in an inebriated state.
As per the prosecution, Jagbir and Balir had consumed liquor around midnight while on duty at the ISBT roundabout in Sector 17. After which they headed towards the police headquarters in Sector 9 and sought leave from duty as they were drunk. The duty officer at the control room reportedly reprimanded them for being drunk on duty and denied them leave.

{{/usCountry}}Heavily drunk, they then created nuisance and began hurling abuses at their colleagues. They threatened they would go to the SSP's residence to seek leave. The constables then headed to the official residence of UT SSP Naunihal Singh in Sector 16. They were some metres away from his residence when they were intercepted.
Police had alleged that Inspector Satpal and assistant sub-inspector Sukhwinder Singh persuaded them to stop when Jagbir pulled out his service revolver and fired two shots at Satpal, who had a miraculous escape. Another inspector tried to stop them, and they threatened and abused him. The police detained Jagbir immediately, while Balir was arrested later in the day.
After the medical examination of the constables was conducted, it was established that they were under heavy influence of liquor.
Police had even alleged that Jagbir was habitual of creating ruckus in a drunken state and had been involved in similar cases in the past.
In November 2010, he had created nuisance outside the SSP's residence while he was on a PCR motorcycle. The SHO of the Sector-17 police station had recommended a departmental inquiry against him.
