Her jewellery collection is a microcosm of the rich heritage and culture of India, yet very contemporary and wearable for the cosmopolitan society of today.
Jewellery designer Mira Gulati, who claims to be the youngest jewellery designer of India, brings her festive collection for the season to Chandigarh at Capitol Taj, Hotel Taj, Sector 17. The designer, who has trained with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Carlsbad, California, after finishing her graduation from Babson College, gets talking to HT City about her award winning handcrafted designs and her fascination with the national bird of India.
Happy to be in Chandigarh for the first time, Delhi-based designer Mira says, “I cater to a lot of clients from Punjab; in fact I have many clients from Ludhiana as well. That’s why I thought of bringing my jewellery to the city, because people here have an eye for luxury jewellery.”
Mira’s jewellery designs have been inspired by the royal history of India — be it her fascination with the peacock or with designs that date back to the Mughal era. Says she, “I love to trace our rich Indian heritage in my collection, like I have picked up the traditional arsi ring, which used to be worn by maharanis. This particular variety of ring opens up to a mirror inside, which used to enable the maharanis to look into it before meeting the maharaja. Such are the jewellery items that interest and inspire me.”
Mira designs her collection for women in the age group of 30-50, nods she, “I mainly cater to the independent and confident women in this age group who are ready to invest in luxury jewellery and heirloom pieces.” Every season Mira designs two collections, which are inspired by different themes and the range of her handcrafted jewellery starts at R10,000 and goes up to a R1 crore.

{{/usCountry}}Letting us in on her love for the peacock, Mira says, “I love to experiment with the bird in my designs. I use coloured stones and briolettes to make the peacock’s neck. In fact, one of my peacock design earrings won an award (Most Innovative Design of the Year) just two months ago.”
Mira has also won awards such as Today’s Traveller Diamond Award 2009 for Upcoming Indian Brand With International Presence, 6th Retail Jeweller Award 2010 for the Designer of the Year and Jewellers Choice Design Awards 2011 for the Best Emerald Design of the Year.
Mira also custom makes jewellery for her clients. “I customise my jewellery for occasions. I can design jewellery keeping in mind the colour of the dress one is planning to wear to the occasion. At Mirari, we also accept old jewellery and transform it into contemporary, wearable and stylish pieces.” Her celebrity clien tele includes Priya Chatwal, Charu Sachdev, Anoushka Shanker, Ira Dubey and Lillette Dubey.
