The district administration however imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CRPC as a preventive measure.

Shops and business establishments opened in the town today after four days and the people came out of their houses for purchasing essential commodities.

One person was killed and another seriously injured in police firing in the town on March 29 following communal tension between two groups of different communities.

The trouble arose when some Sikh activists came in confrontation with supporters of some Hindu organisation who had given a call for Gurdaspur bandh a day after the Punjab bandh on the Rajoana issue. Police resorted to firing twice to control the situation.

The government had suspended SSP Narinder Pal Singh and DSP Manpreet Singh after the family members of Jaspal Singh an engineering student who was killed in police firing on March 29 maintained that they would not cremate his body till action was taken against the two police officers.

A case under Section 302 of the IPC had already been filed against ASI Ajwinder Pal Singh on the complaint of the deceased's father.
