The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday dismissed the anticipatory bail application of four Punjab police head constables posted at Sekhwan police station in Batala (Gurdaspur), who are accused of a custodial death.
Dismissing the anticipatory bail plea of Satwinder Singh, Pritpal Singh, Baldev Singh and Surjeet Singh, the court directed them to appear before the trial court in Gurdaspur.
The four were booked on July 1, 2012, for murder following the custodial death of Pargat Singh, on the complaint of the deceased’s wife Harjinder Kaur. She had alleged that the accused had picked up her husband and beaten him in police custody, leading to his death.
The cops had tried to pass off the death as an accident, claiming that Pargat was drunk and had tried to jump over the wall after seeing the police. The cops had claimed that the wall had then collapsed, and Pargat had been buried alive under it.
“The accused cops had beaten him to death, which is evident from 19 injuries sustained by Pargat, as per the post-mortem report. The court, considering the gravity of the offence, dismissed their plea for anticipatory bail and directed them to appear before the court in Gurdaspur,” said advocate Onkar Singh Batalvi.
