The Medicos Legal Action Group (MLAG) has opposed the Clinical Establishment Act (CEA) and said the law, if implemented, will raise the cost of treatment in small and medium healthcare establishments.
The union health ministry, on its website, has asked for feedback from stakeholders regarding minimum standards under the CEA to be sent by October 9.
Dr Neeraj Nagpal, convener of MLAG, said that the idea of 26 licences for a small 10-bed nursing home was absurd and was being brought with ulterior motive of helping hospitals in the private sector.
The trustee of the group, Dr Sandeep Dhavan, said the law was being brought even as more than 75% of healthcare in the country was in hands of private small and medium healthcare establishment.
"The CEA is being drafted with sole idea of closing these establishments. The Government does not have the resources to replace these establishments and the common man will be hit," he claimed.
Members of MLAG felt that despite repeated representations there had been no change in the attitude of the government in its intention to implement CEA. He said that MLAG has decided to seek legal help in the matter and the discrimination against SMHCE will be the ground for such legal recourse once the Act is fully operational.
