A victim of alleged torture by husband and in-laws for giving birth to a girl child and bringing "inadequate" dowry has blamed the police for going soft on the accused by not registering a case of demanding dowry against them.
Sonia Malhotra (27) on Friday alleged that Division Number 3 police, in spite of her recording a statement in which she had alleged that her husband, Suraj Malhotra, and in-laws "tortured" her for dowry, only police registered a case of domestic violence.
She alleged that her husband and in-laws had been enjoying the patronage of some influential persons due to which the police had not registered a case of dowry harassment. She alleged that her in-laws had warned her of dire consequences if she went ahead with the case.
Sonia had on Tuesday reached the civil hospital for treatment after her husband and in-laws had alleged beaten her. She had alleged that her husband had deserted her for want of dowry and delivering a girl child. "Soon after I delivered a girl child, my husband threw me out of my home three months ago. Since then, I have been living with my father Prem Kumar in Basti Guzan locality," she said.
Division Number 3 additional station house officer (SHO) said the police had registered a case under Sections 323 and 324 of the Indian Penal Code against her husband and in-laws. "A case of harassment for dowry will be registered only after a separate complaint in this connection is filed by the complainant. FIR for harassment for dowry is registered only after conducting a preliminary investigation," he said.
